Announcing the Braigo Companion App with Shubham Banerjee

Shubham Banerjee

(Braigo Labs) – From the same company that brought about affordable Braille printing using Legos, another product has been launched that helps visually impaired people. Braigo LabsTM and its founder, Shubham Banerjee, has created a software application that takes visual information and translates it into textual audio.

The visually impaired community faces a unique problem. Information is often visual-based, whether on the Internet or in our daily lives. While many companies and nonprofit organizations have invested capital to create tools that can help, many are standalone solutions and require upfront training. Some are more expensive, and others are unaffordable. Existing screen readers or accessibility tools on our computers today are not able to explain what an image says. This challenge extends across multiple languages and countries.

About Braigo Labs

This company was founded when 13-year-old Shubham Banerjee created an affordable Braille printer out of legos. Not long after, he founded Braigo LabsTM with the help of his parents, and received venture capital funding from Intel and other companies. Now, Banerjee is considered the youngest Silicon Valley entrepreneur.

The new app aims to solve another problem present in the lives of visually impaired people. The Braigo Accessibility Companion reads text from an image and narrates it an audio format. Simply put, it translates images or documents to textual audio using the accessibility features on your iOS devices.

Using Briago

The image, file, or document in the Braigo App can be uploaded in multiple ways. In case of an image file, you will get the description of the visual elements as well. You can either upload an image using the camera of your iPhone or iPad or the gallery.

When to Use Braigo

Here are some situations where Braigo can be used:

  1. You are at a restaurant and the food menu is a readable printed copy. With the upload via camera option on the Braigo app, you can take the picture of the menu, extract the text and read out the same to you to help you decide the menu.
  2. Your friend shares a picture on their social media timeline. You can use the Braigo app to extract the textual description of the image and find out what the image is about.
  3. Braigo app can be useful for visually impaired to understand road signs and messages. They can also use it to read newspaper or other documents.

Our goal with the launch of this app is to build a community where users can upload their documents and make them public so other community members can access those same images.
